The News
She sneaked into the room, placed it in front of me, and that is when the words (the ones which will always be associated with the first time I discovered I will have a baby) came out of mouth, "oh crap!" I have a feeling I won't be able, or is that allowed, to forget these immortal words. This future bundle of joy wasn't planned and this decided to wait until we'd made some serious decisions, just blow them out of the water! It was more reaction that I'd just made a decision, I swear!
A little background. The lovely Kate and I have just returned to England having been away for the past four years, so we're currently staying with my family. Kate is of a Taiwanese persuasion and we are struggling to sort a visa for her; it's not as easy as Meghan and Harry make it seem. Long story short, because I haven't been in the country for six months, I can't get Kate a visa. So, we'd finally sorted out our plan to sort the visa, which we'd able to apply for around the future due date, which needs to be done from outside the country. Unless she found a sponsor, which with recent news seems less of an option. On top of this I'd just accepted a job role, which I took as it seemed easy to escape once I'd reached my target of getting the visa, so I could go to Nepal and Bhutan! Before finding a proper job, obviously... honest. Anywho, this new plans now need to formed.
We now had the joys of breaking the news, or deciding when to break the news, and who we could tell. We also had some other news to break, which we didn't really want to connected the other. I had been waiting for the perfect time to pop the ultimate question. Kate had been feeling sick for the past 10 days, so it had been tricky to get her out of the house to do the deed. On a positive note, Kate had two joyous bits of news on one day! (This baby really was determined to destroy the best laid plans of mice and men). We eventually decided just to tell my parents because we were living with them and Kate's sickness wasn't going anywhere! We may have been keen for a bit of advice too! I actually let it slip to friend first. He'd also just had the same news and he made a shrewd observation about why Kate might be sick and after a couple of beers, I figured, 'Mama didn't raise her no liars!'
To be honest, I have feeling my mum already had a pretty good idea of what was going on. After Kate being sick for over a week, I'd be concerned if see hadn't. I'm pretty sure I know the exact moment she became convinced. We were sitting around the table and we were going to have a nice cup of tea, as you do. I should mention since me and my brother came along, my mum has never enjoyed drinking tea. We told her recently Kate has gone off tea and her reaction was priceless. She let out a long, loud belly laugh full of joy and amusement; I've never witnessed her react like that in my life. But we still had to make it official, so the next day we thought we tell both of the folks. We led with the line, ' I think I know why Kate doesn't like tea anymore.' Dad was too busy watching TV to deal with such riddles (not to paint a bad picture of him, but he'd also failed to notice the new addition to Kate's ring finger), so we moved on to Mum and confirm her suspicions. Unsurprisingly, she was not bowled over with shock. We then moved back on to Dad, it didn't take him long to start getting excited about next Christmas; he was straight into Grandad mode!
Since their initial excitement, they've been much more concerned about our mental state. Which is, to put it mildly, unprocessed. Our next task is to get in touch with a mid wife, which should be fun with a Taiwanese girlfriend, nay Fiancee, who is on a landing visa!
